Mercedes B-Class should soon his final farewell in 2025. However, with this model, the star manufacturer became the forerunner of the premium brands that entered the compact MPV market in 2005. In this episode of Bonne Occaz, we focus on the second generation. Sold from 2012 to 2018, very interesting on the second hand market as it can be found less than 10,000 euros. And for such a price, you won’t find much in Mercedes.
Mercedes Class B: the classiest minivan
In terms of looks, this Mercedes B-Class is different from other compact MPVs on the market. We found large side stripes characteristic of the brand, at the time. Unlike other minivans sold, it also has much sharper lineson its profile and hood, as well as a sharper silhouette.
Inside it the same instrument panel as on the A class, with three cylindrical air vents located below the small screen, but no touchscreen. It’s adjusted via a small button on the center console, but it’s easy to set up. If the overall presentation lacks a little warmth and color, the quality of processing is. You are still on the Mercedes model. For the driver, the seat behind the wheel is not a problem, but the windshield may seem small for an MPV. Sound insulation of the interior is excellent.
Its biggest drawback is at the back. Despite the admission of up to 5 seats, the car is unlikely to accommodate three passengers. Even more concerning is that the Mercedes B-Class has a fixed multi-seater as standard, and it was necessary add an extra €700 to afford a sliding seat. Without it, the rear seatback doesn’t offer any additional space for the 450-litre boot, unless you leave the step. Not very practical for transporting large boxes.
Class B as a “sedan” to drive?
When it comes to driving, the Mercedes B-Class is undoubtedly a minivan the most comfortable in the city. It handles well and is ultimately quite low and nimble for its “small” size. Finally, the driving experience is more than that of a sedan. The manufacturer also decorated it good automatic transmission, the 7G-DCT dual-clutch, which still costs €2,000 extra, makes for more lively restarts and smoother gear ratios. Control of this gearbox is carried out with the help of a comodo located behind the steering wheel.
Engines and prices
As with all models from the German manufacturer, many engines are available. It’s simple, there are more than ten of them. It was the right to gasoline, diesel units and even an electric motor, which is very difficult to find in advertising.
To select, in diesel instead aim 200 CDI with a capacity of 136 hp, which consumes very little fuel and provides better driving pleasure than the 180 CDI. In addition, it is 100% Mercedes mechanics. However, the vast majority of advertising will feature the B-Class powered by the 180 CDI, a genuine Renault unit. Also very low consumption, it remains sufficient and cheaper if performance is not one of your priorities.
For gasoline, choose the largest engine 200 with a capacity of 156 hp, which, of course, consumes a little more, but provides better recovery and acceleration.
In terms of price, you should be able to find a B-Class for less than €10,000, regardless of engine and trim, provided you accept the occasional high mileage, between 150,000 and 200,000 km. For a model with lower mileage, you will have to add between 2,000 and 4,000 euros more.
