Dacia Duster: should you buy the current generation? Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

Since its first generation released in 2010, Dacia Duster enjoys phenomenal success in France and Europe. In 2022, it was the second best-selling SUV for individuals on the continent and one of the best sellers in France. Its current generation dates back to 2018and waiting for her replacement, who will be presented at the end of November, and on the market from next year. But until then is the current Duster still worth it? Let’s see how he…

Full range of engines

Duster has excellent Captur mechanics. Starting with a turbocharged 1.0-litre dual-fuel petrol/LPG engine, it’s quite efficient and economical to use in absolute terms. And for those looking for ease on the main roads or after loading the vehicle, the four-cylinder 1.3 TC e has nothing to envy competitive engines which, very often, have one less cylinder. The smooth and quick automatic transmission that comes with the latter is a complete delight 1.5 dCi is alert and sober. In terms of behavior, the Romanian looks safe, especially since it brakes well. But the suppleness of the suspension, the slight vagueness of the steering and the slightly clumsy front axle make it less efficient in turns than segment leadersled by Ford Puma, Renault Captur and Nissan Juke.

A level of comfort that you should not be ashamed of

Equipped with flexible suspensions, Duster is especially attentive to pits and bumps, is equal to the C3 Aircross both on lying policemen in populated areas and on bumpy departmental roads or roads under construction. With soft seats like the Citroën, the results would be perfect. Sound insulation is also satisfactory regarding air noise and rolling. On the other hand, The 1.3 four-cylinder petrol engines can be a bit noisy under accelerationespecially when compared to three-cylinder rivals Ford Puma, Citroën C3 Aircross and Peugeot 2008. However, the 1.0 LPG remains quite inconspicuous, as does the 1.5 dCi, whose sound seems less serious and aggressive than that of other diesels. .

Satisfactory livelihood

On the practical side, Duster suits the minimum. Unlike the C3 Aircross, Captur and Opel Crossland, the Dacia does not have a sliding seat that would allow you to choose between the passenger compartment and the trunk as needed. But no matter: thanks to its large size, it offers both good cargo volume of 517 dm3 and enough space inside. Of course, Citroën can free up 548 dm3 in the trunk if you move the second row forward, but then there is little legroom. Dacia is also appreciated for its large openings, which facilitate access to the board and loading. However, we would like to find a folding front backrest, very practical for carrying long items, like a “herringbone” SUV.

Always in the game

Of course, Duster prices have increased over time. And it’s hard to agree on anything, especially since the lineup has been revised with new trim. But it remains cheaper than most small SUVs. And if some contrast it with more modern equipment, in particular the active driver assistance system, such as automatic emergency braking or lane keeping assistance, the Dacia is full of convenient devices. In particular, the Journey’s third trim level is the most appealing: not only does it stay reasonably priced, but it also includes everything you’d expect from a family car like automatic air conditioning, rearview camera and tinted rear windows. Hard to find so much for the same budget…
