Since 1982 and the launch of the first generation, Toyota Camry is a success story that has gone far beyond Japan. Widespread in Asia, North America (5d a bestseller in the US in 2022!), in Africa and Europe it was in 2022 the best-selling sedan in the world, exactly! It must be said that this is a sedan with excellent value for money: livable and very well equipped, it is also very economical, having been offered with a hybrid engine for more than 20 years, a technology that is dear to Toyota. From generation to generation, it continues to evolve in its design, mechanics and services: the last and current generation was released in 2017and goes on sale in Europe from next year, replacing the Avensis.
XV80, the ninth Camry
After six years (refresh cycles at Toyota are clearly short), now it is progressing to the ninth generation (codename XV80). Absolutely new, of course, but not completely new, at least stylistically. Here it is easier to talk about restyling, and not about new chips, since the silhouette, shape of the doors and the location of the headlights of the current version are still easily recognizable. However, it is significantly modernized, p redesigned grille and shield, as well as new headlights now in the form of a hook, like the latest novelties of the brand (Crown, C-HR, Prius…). Toyota clearly wanted to act sparingly so as not to distort the design of the current one. Given his success, we understand them, but it’s still disappointing when you know how different the previous Camrys were from each other.
The first exclusively hybrid Camry
Fortunately, the interior develops much deeper. The redesigned dashboard has become less surprising than before and has gained in quality thanks to its drawn lines, plush materials and a new 12.3-inch central touchscreen. There is a new upholstery, as well as driver aids and communication tools. A real revolution under the hood: this ninth Camry is the first to be available with a 100% hybrid engine. Specifics that will not shock Europeans, because we were only entitled to the HSD version with a capacity of 218 horsepower. Two options are currently offered: 225 horsepower in front-wheel drive, 232 horsepower in all-wheel drive. Very popular in France, as it is in Europe, among taxi and VTC drivers, it will be sold here from next year.
