Porsche 911 hybrid: what system will it have? Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

The second phase of the Porsche 911 Type 992 is fast approaching, with its share of new features at the same time. The second phase of the 991 heralded the arrival of turbo engines on almost all versions except the famous GT3 and GT3 RS (and a few special series), and the second phase of 992 should also bring its share of changes.

Even if the changes are minor in terms of aesthetics, there should be a small revolution under the hood. We will remind, at the end of 2018, during the launch of the current 992, the manufacturer’s managers specified that the architecture of the sports car of the eighth generation allowed the installation of a hybrid power plantin particular due to the special location near the gearbox.

Simple hybrid or PHEV for the future Porsche 911?

At the time, we didn’t know if Porsche was going to go with a simple hybrid version or a PHEV. This latter configuration would be ideal to avoid CO taxes.2but it would not necessarily meet all performance criteria, particularly due to the higher weight.

Porsche boss Oliver Blum also gave more details about the upcoming 911 hybrid in an interview with Handelsblatt magazine last year: “911 is an integral part of our sustainable development strategy. The important thing about hybridization is that it doesn’t perform like a plug-in hybrid. Rather, these are characteristics taken from competitors, with a very dynamic hybrid system with high energy recovery efficiency. Like the 919 Hybrid, with which we won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times in a row.”

All for productivity

As expected, therefore, the engineers chose a simple hybrid system, with a disposable solution with a small battery and high performance. As a result, this hybrid 911 will leave aside consumption and CO2 emissions.2 focus on productivity.

Porsche has apparently been working on a system capable of storing and quickly delivering electricity to the electric motor it powers. It remains to be seen whether this hybrid system will apply to all versions (excluding the GT3) or a special series, a kind of extreme 911, a bit like the GT2 RS, capable of setting a new record to mark the arrival of electrification on the most iconic Porsche.

In general, for the French market, we don’t necessarily need to count on this hybrid version to escape punishment in 2024. This model is eligible for a maximum fine of €60,000 as the hybrid system will only be a performance aid.

Some may then wonder if it really makes sense to add weight to the 911 if it continues to suffer such penalties from a financial perspective. No doubt Porsche will defend itself by touting high-end specs, but will the gain really be significant compared to the GT3 RS, which increases the feeling tenfold with its naturally aspirated engine, or the ultra-high-performance Turbo S? Answer within a few months.
