The partnership between Renault and Geely is bearing the first fruits. Shortly after the announcement of the collaboration between the two automotive giants, new details have been revealed about the joint venture, which will be led by to the development of a series of new models based on the Geely CMA platform (already used on several cars, including Lynk & Co, Polestar and Volvo), which will form the basis of a new series of models for the D and E segments.
The platform will allow the Franco-Chinese joint venture to develop new two- and all-wheel drive models equipped with thermal, hybrid or electric engines.
Series of models for international markets
On the occasion of the presentation of the Niagara concept car, Renault and Geely presented the “International Game Plan 2027”. This is a strategy to “relaunch” the French brand at the international level an investment of three billion euros to support the launch of eight new models by 2027starting with the Kardian, a B-segment SUV.
The design of the models that will appear over the next four years has been announced by the Niagara concept, a prototype pick-up, but based on the Renault platform, rather than Geely’s CMA.
All-wheel-drive models built on the CMA platform will feature a PHEV system with a gasoline engine driving the front wheels, while a dedicated battery-powered electric motor will drive the rear wheels. Renault production based on the CMA platform will begin in Busan, South Korea. The cars will then be sold in Latin America, North America, Turkey and India.
What is the CMA platform?
CMA, which stands for “compact modular architecture”. It is a platform with a modular architecture that can include different power plants, from diesel to 100% electric.
This is not the first time that a Chinese company has become a supplier for a European automaker. Volkswagen, for example, will use Xpeng’s E/E platform for its future electric cars sold in China, Audi will adopt IM Motors’ iO Origin architecture, and Leapmotor will equip future Stellantis models with its platform.
