THE Volvo EM90 this is the upcoming 100% electric model that will bring the Swedish manufacturer into the segment of MPVs and other minivans. Ahead of the official unveiling scheduled for November 12, 2023, Volvo has already released several teasers to announce the EM90, but leaks from China have only spoiled the surprise.

Indeed, it was on the website of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) that we were able to discover some particularly detailed photos exterior design future Swedish minivan. The mission of this official body is to inspect every car in China before it starts production and to report the results of its work on its website. That’s how many photos of upcoming models, not yet published, manage to leak through this medium long before their official presentation.

Volvo EM90: Massive styling for this electric minivan

Not surprisingly, this 100% electric minivan shares many elements with the Zikr 009, another model from the Geely group. We find a massive style and a certain family resemblance at the level of the front, center and rear pillars, or even its sides, with sculpted wheel arches and that separation from the body at the level of the rear doors, like a shark fin.

Some distinctive elements were made for the Volvo version, such as a unique light signature at the front, where we find the famous Thor’s hammer from the Swedish manufacturer, and at the back with optics on a black background. The front end is also new, and unlike the Zeekr 009, which is particularly flashy, this one looks softer and in the spirit of the brand’s recent EVs, such as the Volvo EX30.

In addition to these detailed photos of the exterior design, MIIT has also released some technical data on Volvo’s first electric MPV: it covers The length is 5206 meters2,024 meters wide and 1,859 meters high, and all this for a wheelbase of 3,205 meters. This is exactly the same value as for the Zeekr 009, confirming the common technical platform of these two models.

MIIT also clarifies that its rear-mounted electric motor is under development 272 horsepower. Zeekr 009 is also available in a version with two developing electric motors 535 horsepower, which is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 5 seconds: it wouldn’t be surprising if this four-wheel drive variant also landed at Volvo. The batteries will also be borrowed from the Zeekr 009, with a capacity of 1000 hp 116 and 140 kWhwhich provides a range of up to 822 km according to the Chinese CLTC cycle.

Interior details, including the number of seats available on board, are yet to be revealed, but we should see several configurations ranging from 6-8 seats depending on the selected version. The Volvo EM90 is already becoming a family-friendly electric minivan and will focus on its premium features, a spirit that is making a strong return to the market with, for example, the Hyundai Staria and other Lexus LM models.
