We no longer represent you ZFEs, these “low emission zones” are being developed throughout the areaand which restrict the movement of vehicles classified as polluting. specifically, every motorist who wants to travel in one of the 11 national metropolises equipped with such a device (Grand Paris, Lyon, Aix-Marseille, Toulouse, Nice, Montpellier, Strasbourg, Grenoble, Rouen, Reims and Saint-Etienne) are forced to attach to their windshield Crit’Air sticker, which classifies their vehicle according to its energy (diesel, petrol, electric) and age. Those considered too polluting (Crit’Air 5, Crit’Air 4, etc.) are prohibited from circulating exclusively in demarcated areas. But as we told you, these measures are not new, and you are beginning to know the principle.

Several European cities are also starting

But what about traveling abroad? Because even if they don’t have the same name, ZFEs also exist in major metropolitan areas in the European Union. In one of them, car traffic is even on the verge of existence prohibited for any locomotives (gasoline and diesel). A radical solution that will leave the field open only to electric vehicles powered by batteries or hydrogen. But which cities are we talking about? Let’s do it a short tour of Europe according to the rules in force at the moment.

Cities in Europe where car traffic is restricted

  • Ghent (Belgium): there vehicular traffic is prohibited within 35 hectares making up the city center, even electric! Locals travel by bicycle.
  • Amsterdam (Netherlands): Amsterdam, known for its very dense bicycle traffic, is developing strict car policy. Without being banned, traffic there is very restricted and restricted, so much so that only a quarter of trips are made by car.
  • Oslo (Norway): Reduced speed, no one-way traffic, no parking spaces: the city of Oslo is doing everything to drive cars out of the city center. Today it is estimated that 20% of its territory became pedestrianand this policy is only becoming more pronounced from month to month.
  • Hamburg (Germany): in 2018, Hamburg was the first European city to ban Euro 5 diesel cars (registered before 2015). Since then, she has become an example for Frankfurt, Berlin, Mainz and Darmstadt.
  • Madrid (Spain): ZBE (equivalent to our ZFE) of the Spanish capital prohibits circulation Euro 5 diesel and Euro 4 gasoline cars.
  • London (England): the far center of the British capital is closed cars with Euro 5 classification (petrol and diesel)
  • Stockholm (Sweden): a real revolution in automobile traffic can happen from the Swedish capital! From 2025, Stockholm plans to simply ban thermal cars in the city center, gasoline and diesel! A radical solution that could give ideas to other European metropolises…
