Opel: a new model for 25,000 euros and the return of Manta Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

Who wins the big battle for a versatile electric car under €25,000? This, along with autonomy and recharging, is the third problem facing this technology: the price! Because unlike gasoline or diesel cars, which cost an average of 26,000 euros, that’s an average of €35,000 for their electric counterparts. In a kind of race for innovation, all manufacturers are working to make electricity affordable, or rather to overcome the fatal threshold of less than 25,000 euros! Of course, some models have already achieved this, but their size and limited features do not make them truly versatile cars. Renault promised this with its R5 E-Tech, Volkswagen with its ID.2Citroën with its ë-C3and even Fiat with its electric Panda. Not forgetting, of course, the Chinese competitors in MG, BYD or Wuling. What if the surprise actually came… from Opel?

Electric car for less than 25,000 euros from Opel

German brand (integrated into the Stellantis group) at present with full transition to 100% electricity. With the exception of utilities, Corsa, Astra and Mokka will appear in the catalog, for this premiere the entry price is still 34,550 euros (the environmental bonus is not deducted). Priority for the manufacturer today: to develop a new generation of platforms completely dedicated to electricity (and not adapted from thermal basements), but also new generation batteries.

Starting in 2025, Stellantis will produce next-generation battery cells in a joint venture at the Gigafactory, which will be built in Germany. The goal is set brand boss Florian Hüttl (asked by our German colleagues from Augsburger Allgemeine) We will be able to offer electric cars for around 25,000 euros. With the next generation of our platforms. We are working hard on it. One thing can be said for sure: electric cars are becoming cheaper. »

Manta returns in electric form

Opel has already announced its intention launch electric models only from 2025. Among them is a pleasant surprise of the day: the return of Manta! You know, the Ascona-based coupe that was sold in two generations in 1970 and 1975. Opel will bring it back to electricitybut Florian Hüttl assured him that it would not be a neo-retro product. It will be an electric coupe with its own design, which gives a little nod to its predecessor from the 70s, not wanting to imitate it. The Experimental concept presented in Munich at the beginning of the academic year should strongly inspire the philosophy of this modern Manta. “The new Manta will ‘hook’ fans of the old one, but also appeal to those who have never seen a Manta before,” he said.
