How does Porsche plan to deal with speculation surrounding its cars? Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

Porsche recently unveiled the top-of-the-line 911 S/T, which features the GT3 RS engine and manual transmission. In spirit, it is a model somewhat in the same vein as the 911 R of its time, and which is part of the manufacturer’s Heritage line, just like the 911 Dakar, Sport Classic or Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition.

Obviously, like many other exclusive Porsches, The 911 S/T is a matter of speculation. To counter this phenomenon, Porsche asks its network to carefully select its customers so that they do not take advantage of the opportunity to speculate on the car. Even so, this does not prevent certain abuses.

Rent instead of buy?

But in the United States, Porsche seems to have found a solution to this problem. As Frank Moser, head of the Porsche 911 and 718 line, explains, an American 911 S/T customer will not be able to obtain full ownership within the first 12 months.

“When the 911 S/T was announced to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 911, we received unprecedented interest in the car, far exceeding the number of units destined for the United States”– Frank Moser explained to The Drive journalists during a round table.

“We want to make sure the 911 S/T is available to true enthusiasts who will drive and enjoy it for years to come.”he added.

Is Porsche democratizing this system?

To ensure this, happy customers who are assigned a purchase order in the United States must respect the agreed minimum storage period is one year. In practice, this means that cars in the US will first be “leased” for 12 months before “transferring ownership”.

Is a similar system planned for the French market? Porsche France representatives we contacted said they were aware of the practice, but that was not on the agenda, especially since all 911 S/Ts destined for the French market have already been sold. It remains to be seen whether such a practice could be legal in France, as the United States is known to be more flexible on this level.
