Equipment manufacturer Bosch recently announced plans to liquidate approx about a hundred jobs at its plant in Mondeville, located near Caen in Calvados. The decision, which followed discussions with unions over the spring and summer, comes as part of the company’s efforts to find a buyer for the factory.
The company confirmed this news, clarifying that departures are planned “can be done in the first half of 2024”. According to the Bosch group, 485 people currently work at the Mondeville factory. To cut nearly a fifth of the site’s workforce, Bosch mainly considers early retirement as well as voluntary retirement.
A divisive decision
The announcement prompted an immediate reaction from the department’s union and the CGT steelworkers’ federation, which expressed their “anger” in a press release. Trade union representatives are afraid of the consequences of this decision for the workers of the plant and the local community.
Nevertheless, Bosch explained that its decision was aimed at “increasing competitiveness” from the Mondeville factory. This factory, specializing in electronics, since 2015, diversified its activities beyond the automotive sector.
Numerous job cuts at Bosch
In parallel with these reductions, Bosch is actively looking for a buyer “with a reliable industrial project”. The signing of a framework agreement with the unions paved the way for this approach in the hope of preserving industrial activity in the Mondeville area.
This is not the first time that Bosch has taken restructuring measures. At the end of 2021 the company announced the liquidation of 750 positions out of 1,250 in Rodez, Aveyron. In addition, a major industrial project called Fresh2, which represented half of Rhodesia’s remaining workforce, was suspended last June, raising concerns about the future of the venture.
