Tesla recently announced a new option for its Model S and Model X: customers will now have a choice between a traditional steering wheel and the controversial Yoke. However, this new opportunity comes at a price, and it is far from modest.
In 2021, Tesla caused a stir by introducing the Yoke as a standard steering wheel on its two high-end models. Drivers and fans of the brand found themselves in the catalog with only one option – Yoke, a steering wheel of an unusual rectangular shape and a rather complex handle.
Standard, then free, then paid
However, in response to criticism and customer preference, Tesla eventually reversed course and made the round steering wheel the new default option, allowing customers to choose the Yoke as a free option.
In the spring, Tesla also responded to complaints from dissatisfied drivers in the US by offering them the option to replace the Yoke with a traditional steering wheel for an additional $750. The company later included the Yoke as a separate option, available for $250.
Is the option too expensive now?
As is often the case with Tesla, changes have occurred once again. As long as the yoke remains available, Tesla is currently asking an additional $1,000 for this option, or 1000 euros from us. The traditional steering wheel, for its part, remains the default option and does not create additional costs for customers.
Tesla also announced development plans a version that combines both solutions. In this configuration, the Yoke will still be available, but it will be integrated into a more conventional handlebar, thus abandoning its rectangular shape. This development should also allow Tesla to improve the quality of its product, which was criticized when it was first launched.
