As part of its electrification strategy Stellantis is currently transforming its manufacturing and engineering facilities around the world. Within the industrial site of the village Mirafiorilocated in Turin, Italy, the automotive group just inaugurated the first battery center ultramodern, named after “Center of Accumulator Technologies”.
“Today we have a unique opportunity: to redefine mobility by offering our customers ecological and intelligent solutions”Ned Couric, Chief Engineering Officer of Stellantis, said on the occasion: “Our new battery technology center in Mirafiore allows us to combine the tools and talent needed for design, testing and control to produce advanced products that can meet our customers’ expectations and accelerate the deployment of high-performance electric vehicles for all consumers worldwide. »
Battery center in Italy
The technological center of batteries in Mirafiore is the largest in Italy and one of the most important in Europe, its area is 8000 m² and more than one hundred employees. This required an investment of size 40 million euroswhich will allow Stellantis to design, develop and test different battery components: battery packs, modules, high voltage cells or even software that will be installed on future electric vehicles.
Stellantis will perform climate change resistance testing, durability testing, battery management system software development and calibration, and disassembly of units and cells for analysis. Battery center of the house 32 chambers for climatic testsincluding 24 test rooms for battery packs and 8 rooms for battery cells.
These cameras will monitor humidity and temperature in the -40 to 60°C range, and test up to 47 battery packs and 96 cells simultaneously. The electrical system can handle up to 1.2 kV and 2.2 MW of energy per test chamber.
6 gigafactories around the world
The Mirafiori Technology Center will also be responsible for selecting innovative battery chemistries for tomorrow’s models and characterizing cell behavior for development purposes.
Stellantis is also building another battery technology center in North America, which will be located in Windsor, Ontario, Canada: this future site will enrich Stellantis’ international battery manufacturing and development network, which will include less than 6 gigafactories (battery factories).
