Stellantis: most of its engines are compatible with synthetic fuel News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your inbox

Stellantis engines produced since 2014 are compatible with synthetic fuel. This is the result of tests carried out by a group under the leadership of Carlos Tavares, who analyzed in recent months 24 families of engines equipped with several cars sold in Europe according to the Euro-6 standard.

Essentially, Thus, 28 million cars in circulation are ready to accept synthetic fuelwithout the need for technical modifications to the engine.

Real profit in reducing CO emissions2 ?

As Stellantis points out, the tests were carried out using synthetic fuel supplied by Aramco and obtained as a result of the reaction of CO2 captured in the atmosphere or at an industrial facility using renewable hydrogen.

According to the study, the use of these synthetic fuels would reduce emissions by 70% throughout the engine’s life cycle compared to conventional fuels.

Too rare a solution

Stellantis estimates a reduction in CO emissions of 400 million tons2 between 2025 and 2050. Nevertheless, it is clear that synthetic fuel has not yet become widespreadat least for now, although many companies are doubling down on their efforts in this area.

For example, Aramco is working with ENOWA in Saudi Arabia to produce synthetic gasoline for passenger vehicles, while in Spain it is also experimenting with synthetic diesel for aircraft.

“Our priority is to provide zero-emission mobility for all, focusing in particular on electrification. Our collaboration with Aramco is an important and complementary step for vehicles already in service. We are exploring all solutions to implement our ambitious strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2038. Synthetic fuels can have a huge and almost instantaneous impact on reducing CO2 emissions.2 of the existing park »says Ned Couric, director of development and technology at Stellantis.
