A study carried out by AAA DATA has deciphered the typical portrait of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) filling up scrapyards in mainland France. Executed between 1Er Between May 2022 and April 30, 2023, this study shows impressive data on the age, motorization and owners of these vehicles destined for scrapping.

For most vehicles on the road, the end of the journey takes place in a car junkyard. Whether they are cars that are badly damaged beyond repair, or that their owners have decided to separate in order to take advantage of the conversion bonus, these VEHICLES are governed by the European Directive of 2000 as well as the French Environmental Code. of the same year

Diesel cars are mainly handed over for disposal

The average age of vehicles that are sent for disposal is 20.5 years old. Almost all used cars are more than 12 years old. Passenger cars make up the vast majority of PZV, p a share of 88%, followed far behind by utilities, motorcycles and mopeds. Among these cars, the vast majority run on diesel, i.e. 65%.

Mostly individuals, i.e. 96% of cases, decide to send their end-of-life vehicle to the final destination. The rest is from legal entities.

Is the conversion bonus too selective?

An important takeaway from this study is that 38% of these owners meet the criteria needed to receive a conversion bonus.

However, to qualify, the destroyed vehicle must meet certain criteria and the price of the purchased vehicle must not exceed €47,000. Assuming that only half of these ELV owners investing in a new car have a taxable income of less than €22,983, only 17% are eligible for a conversion bonus.
