Volkswagen Passat SW (IAA Munich 2023): only in station wagon! News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your mailbox

In the case of Munich Motor Show 2023there Volkswagen Passat renewed with 9th generation a little special The German firm opens its large family only in the form of a break and say goodbye to sedan ! A nice way to give some air to the recent electric ID.7, the upcoming new model for VW’s large sedan lineup. Good news for big riders, this one is here to stay thermal, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and even diesel !

Extended Volkswagen Passat SW

New generation, new size. Volkswagen Passat SW on the MQB evo2 modular platform wins from all sides. Thanks to the current length of 2.84 meters, the wheelbase has been increased by five centimeters, which indicates excellent liveability on board. What is even more impressive, the station wagon increases by 14.4 centimeters in length and reaches 4.92 meters, which is equal to, for example, the Mercedes E-Class! Finally, the width increases by two centimeters to 1.85 meters, while the height remains unchanged at 1.51 meters.

A style that develops smoothly

If the size of the Passat changes, this 9th generation also changes the style of the large family. The model adopts the new aesthetic codes of the manufacturer, which are close to the electric models of the ID line. Visually, the new Passat has even smoother and more aerodynamic lines. Two intakes on each side of the front end also direct the incoming air flow to the wheel arches. The drag coefficient drops and Cx goes from 0.31 has 0.25.

Its hood is down, and the grille almost disappears. Instead, a rather thin black headband replaces the previously known design with a light headband that runs along the entire top of the headband, like the ID.7. Engine cooling is provided by a huge air intake in the lower part. The headlights are also inspired by the latest VW creations and can be matrix with the IQ.Light option.

At the back, a large LED strip runs along the tailgate, which connects the two taillights. A wide spoiler completes the silhouette of a large station wagon. Finally, the Passat SW is equipped with 19-inch wheels.

Very technological interior

On board the wagon, a digital cockpit welcomes the driver with a 10.25-inch dashboard screen supported by a new touchscreen. The latter is huge and reaches 12.9 inches or even 15 inches as an option! The on-board computer is the new MIB4 infotainment system, which has been developed based on past criticisms of the older system with less practical ergonomics. The restrained lower band serves as ventilation. Another techno side, a projection display system that projects directly onto the windshield.

Whoever says station wagon means a big trunk

In terms of comfort and boot space, the new Passat SW is no exception to the rule and is extremely generous. Rear legroom is very good, and Volkswagen even states that it increases by 5 centimeters, which is exactly the extra length seen with the increased wheelbase. In addition, to ensure maximum comfort, the two front seats use the ergoActive technology already used in the ID.7 seats, with massage and temperature control!

As a station wagon, the Passat SW has a record volume of 690 liters, an increase of 40 liters. When the rear seat is folded, the volume reaches 1920 liters.

Many engines are available

A large number of engines are available for this 9th generation Passat. There are at least 8 different configurations:

  • 2 Gasoline 2.0 TSI with 204 Or 265 hp
  • 3 diesel engines 2.0 TDI with 122, 150 AND 193 hp
