In July, the European car market experienced its twelfth consecutive month of growth, surpassing 851,000 registrations.

Just last month, In the European Union, 851,156 units were sold, up 15.2% year-on-year, with clear growth in the four largest markets: +19.9% ​​in France, +18.1% in Germany, +10.7% in Spain and +8.7% in Italy . In the first seven months of the year, the growth was 17.6%, with 6.3 million new cars sold, which is 22% less than in the same period in 2019, before the pandemic.

The European car market has started to grow steadily again since August 2022, when the health crisis combined with shortages of parts, including critical electronic components, hit it on the head.

Diesel (temporarily) replaces electricity

Despite surging 60.6% to 115,971 units in July, EV sales account for 13.6% of the market, behind petrol (35.8%) and diesel (14.1%). when they went last in June for the first time in history.

From January to July, around 2.3 million petrol cars (+14% year-on-year) were sold in the EU, compared to 910,000 diesels (-3%) and 820,000 electric ones (+55%). Hybrids reached 1.6 million sales in the period (+29%) and battery hybrids 468,000 units (+2%).

In terms of brands and manufacturers, Tesla experienced the strongest growth in July, up almost 14,000 vehicles (+650%), but still a long way behind giants Volkswagen (233,000 units, +18%) and Stellantis (144,000 sales, -6 .1%). . Renault group sales increased by 17% to 90,000 registrations.
