THE auctions cars is an opportunity to contemplate rare cars, sometimes priceless, but also such unusual models 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider Series I by Pinin Farina : a true rarity, as it only existed 13 copies only.

This particular example, which was auctioned in Pebble Beach a few days ago, is part of Monterey Car Week 2023is now nothing more than a rusted and charred wreck: that didn’t stop it from being sold for $1.875 million, equivalent to approx. 1.72 million euros !

Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider: charred carcass at a price of gold

The famous house RM Sotheby’s, which organized the auction, presents it as a “a perfect candidate for an intriguing restoration project”. The car is part of a ‘Lost & Found’ collection of 20 Ferraris up for sale for the occasion.

At the time, this Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider, with chassis number 0406 MD, was the second example produced: almost 60 years earlier, it had crashed during a race, causing a fire. Now it is difficult to imagine the red color of its body, the presence of wheels or even the atmosphere of its cabin.

She could swallow Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 secondsfor a top speed of 235 km/h: a feat for the time which, in particular, led to participation in the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio and Imola Grand Prix, in Italy, from the year of its production.

In its own juice for almost 60 years

In 1958, this racing Ferrari was exported to the USA, where it participated in numerous car races. It then changed hands several times until it found its last owner in 1963.

This classic car dealer replaces its stock engine with an American V8: common practice at the time. Over the next two years, she caught fire while racing. So the owner has decided to leave it in this state.
