Modern MPVs are a bit of ancient history. They were sacrificed on the altar of SUVs, and even if the latter are generally less practical, their design has managed to dominate the (not so sexy) minivan segment.

But fashion being the eternal reboot, minivans may not have had their last word yet. The proof is Volvo, which announces Presentation of the all-new Volvo EM90 on November 12, 2023. It will be a premium electric minivan, which will initially be aimed at the Chinese market, but will have the right to an international career.

To accompany the announcement, Volvo released a single teaser image showing the rear of the EM90, a model expected to share many elements with the new Volvo EX90.

Volvo EM90: a luxury minivan?

As such, the only available photo of the EM90 shows us what looks like a small van with a large rear panoramic roof and sunroof at the front, as well as prominent exterior handles that hint at a large sliding rear door. The vertical cutout of the back proves that this product is primarily intended for transportation.

The short video also shows a living room equipped with a table, a computer and a cafe, the plan of which merges with the interior of the Volvo EM90. Through the panoramic roof, we can see the hand of the passenger sitting in the right rear seat, who has the same coffee on the cup holder of the armrest, and the computer on the pull-out table. Volvo intends to give back feeling of well-being in your carwith the spirit of “living room”.

Electric minivans come into force

We don’t have the technical details yet, but it’s conceivable The Volvo EM90 may be based on the same SPA2 platform as the EX90, with the possibility of also having a version with two electric motors and four-wheel drive. However, since Volvo is part of Geely, it is possible that this product will also be based on the SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform that the Zeekr 009 is based on.

Minivans in general have been making a comeback lately, although they’re more minivans than the minivans we knew them as a decade ago. Thus, we can mention the full hybrid Lexus LM, the electric Mercedes EQV, as well as the Zeekr 009, as mentioned above, or the Denza D9. The latter will also be present at the next Monaco Motor Show, while the Denza will become BYD’s new premium subsidiary.
