Last week, American magazine Car and Driver said that Mercedes “considered” to reintroduce the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 under the hood of the C63 AMG and E63 AMG in 2026.

After a few days, it seems that this rumor has already gone. Indeed, the magazine Auto Motor und Sport, after speaking with some employees of the firm in Affalterbach, confirmed that the V8 will not be returning.

“Ordinary nonsense”

According to the German magazine, the employee “Familiar with product development” said that the V8 will no longer return under the hood of the two sports sedans, calling the initial rumor a “complete nonsense”.

Thus, the most powerful version of the current C-Class will retain the current hybrid configuration with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. As for the next E 63, it is not yet known whether it will be equipped with a six-cylinder inline or a four-cylinder.

The competition is still resisting

Even if fans would like to see the return of certain iconic engines, such as the famous V8, the chances are slim, at least in Europe. Increasingly stricter emissions regulations have forced manufacturers to review their range and, above all, to apply some drastic changes to their sports cars.

In general, Mercedes-AMG also has competition which is not yet subject to electrification sirens. The Audi RS 6 is soon to become a plug-in hybrid, likely with a V6, while the upcoming BMW M5 will do the same, but with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8.

In the case of the future E 63, it’s hard to imagine it competing with these two models on a commercial level if it’s introduced with a four-cylinder hybrid.
