Freeways: 150 km/h limit soon? News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your mailbox

In the European Union, even if the Road Traffic Rules tend towards standardization, there are no common rules speed limit, especially on highways. Indeed, for example, in France we usually drive at a speed of 130 km/h on the autostrada, while in our neighbors it is more like 120 km/h, which is the norm, as for example in Belgium, Spain or even Portugal.

The exception, which is always cited as an example, is Germany, where there is no speed limit on the autobahn, except in certain sections that are really dangerous, and where the speed limit is marked by signs. Some environmental activists, however, want to introduce speed limits on German autobahns, but this has so far been unsuccessful.

Motorways: These countries deviate from the speed limit

Thus, the German government bets on the individual responsibility of motorists, who can therefore move freely in the permitted areas, as long as they do not endanger other users. This is a desire take responsibility and trust common sense motorists are also shared by other neighboring countries such as the Czech Republic and Italy.

Indeed, the bill has just been passed Czech Republicand speed limit 150 km/h will come into effect on January 1, 2024, on sections of highways marked with 150 signs, instead of 130 km/h today.

in Italy, it is the local Ministry of Transport that wants things to change in the right direction, and for the speed limit to be increased to 150 km/h on more than 1,500 km of motorway sections. Priority will be given to the widest motorways (2 x 3 lanes) which will benefit from this, but be careful as speed cameras will be installed there to prevent possible abuse.

Motorways: there is little chance of driving at a speed of 150 km/h in France

Can we expect a speed limit of 150 km/h on French autobahns ? If we are completely realistic, then it is quite reasonable to believe that it is not. Indeed, unlike our neighbors, in our beautiful country there is an atmosphere of restrictions and sanctions rather than responsibility and trust in citizens.

Recently, the debate has even moved in the direction of wanting to reduce the maximum speed allowed on French highways under the guise of road safety or even ecology. Some members of the current government have even expressed their desireintroduce speed limits on highways up to 110 km/hbefore changing your mind.

Fortunately, the speed limit on French autobahns will remain at the level of 130 km/h, at least for now. The painful memory of going up to 80 km/h on minor roads, the limit gradually disappearing to return to 90 km/h, is not necessarily foreign to him… And the current social climate is tense enough to add fuel to the fire.
