Fuel: why are prices still not falling in France? News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your mailbox

The summer holidays are now in full swing all over France and many of you have already hit the road to enjoy beautiful days by the sea or elsewhere. If the car still remains the most popular mode of transport however, to go green, drivers have to deal with rising prices, be it tolls, maintenance or even fuel. And it doesn’t seem to be getting better, and refueling is still very expensive. The war in Ukraine is somehow related to this, even if its influence on Europe tends to decrease. But not necessarily with us.

High prices

Indeed, in the rest of Europe the price of fuel continues to fall. Of course, we are still far from the very low level reached during and after the birth, when a liter is priced at €1.20. But two euros are far behind, and prices have returned to levels equivalent to pre-war levels. But this is not the case with us. And for good reason, gasoline and diesel are still very expensive, and are even showing a slight rebound. However, they are still lower than at the beginning of the year. It takes on average 1.914 euros per liter of unleaded 98 and 1.724 euros per liter of diesel.

Why is there no fall?

But then why is France the only European country where prices are still not falling, even though the government has asked distributors to reduce their margins? Seems through increase in the price of bioethanol, which consists of unleaded 95 E10, is especially appreciated by French motorists. Not to mention taxes, which make up about 60% of the price of a liter of fuel. Finally, according to certain associations, distributors’ margins will also remain too high.
