Avere-France, the national association for the development of electric mobility, has considered the possibility of deploying charging infrastructure for electric vehicles on motorways. As of June 30, 2023, just before the start of the long summer vacation, it is now 99% of highway sections in the concession network which are equipped fast charging stations.

“All lights are green for big holiday shipments for the French this summer. The current network of charging stations on motorways is very reassuring for electric drivers, who can now charge quickly on average every 50 km. This increase in the number of charging on motorways is the result of a great mobilization by concession companies and charging participants who have been working on the full integration of electric mobility on motorways.”said on this occasion Clément Molison, General Delegate of Auvergne.

The highway network is well equipped with fast charging stations

Electric cars are booming in Europe and to support this phenomenon it is important to have network of charging stations is ready to meet the energy needs of motorists who have chosen an electric car, especially during vacations.

In France we now have more than 100,000 charging points open to the public: this makes France the second best-equipped country in the European Union, just behind the Netherlands, but ahead of Germany. As of June 30, 2023, it is 366 districts of the concession network, i.e. 99% of the network that is currently equipped 2922 fast charging pointsthat is, one unit of equipment on average every 50 km. 83% this equipment provides power more than 150 kWwhich allows fast charging at very high power without stopping the vehicle for a long time.

French motorways now fulfill the obligations established by the European AFIR regulation (Regulation of the infrastructure of alternative types of fuel), which provides for the installation of fast charging stations with a capacity of at least 400 kW every 60 km on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) by 2025.

How good is it to travel in an electric car?

Avere-France also provides some guidance on prepare as best as possible for a trip in an electric car : for example, it is important to know maximum charging power is accepted by his model to choose a terminal adapted to his needs. However, we advise you to avoid ultra-fast charging if the car’s autonomy exceeds 50%, in order not to damage the battery.

In addition to a break every 2 hours, it is desirable to provide for stops in accordance withlocation of charging stations accessible: apps that are available directly on board vehicles or on a mobile phone can be very useful for this.
