The phasing in of EVs is increasingly controversial between elected officials, who apparently see environmental benefits, and others who, in turn, are causing a certain “social divide” between those who can buy new, low-emission cars, and others. the poorest who do not necessarily have the means to access these new technologies.

That’s why several elected officials are working on support measures, and Socialist MPs have just introduced a text supporting the creation of low-emission zones. Their goal is to phase out the most polluting vehicles from major cities.offering alternatives to public transport.

Will the weight of vehicles be taken into account soon?

Among their demands – a “Crit’Air sticker system reform”mandatory for traffic in ZFE, in order to take into account the mass of vehicles. The idea is to avoid favoring new but heavy vehicles, particularly SUVs.

In their bill submitted to the National Assembly, the Socialists also propose to stipulate penalties for drivers who violate the ZFE. These sanctions can only be applied if the region in question has a “capital regional express”.

Deputy Gérard Leseul, at the beginning of the text, also asks a “extension” and an “permanence of the system of zero rate loan for vehicle replacement”as well as a “conversion bonus reform for capital increase”.

New subscriptions for public transport?

The bill also provides for the creation of “climate pass” for 48 euros per month for travelers using regional trains, with the exception of TGV. In addition, it will make it mandatory for companies and administrations to use a “sustainable mobility package”, which will make it possible to pay compensation to employees who use more environmentally friendly modes of transport.

Although the socialist text is not on the agenda of the Assembly, it aims to influence the ongoing debate on the EPZ, which should be common in all major cities by early 2025.

A few weeks ago, La France insoumise (LFI) also submitted a bill aimed at protecting the working classes from the effects of the EPZ. In January, Les Républicains (LR) supported a bill from the National Union (RN) aimed at abolishing the ZFE, but it was rejected by the Assembly.
