THE EPZ (Low Emission Zones) in France are multiplying at great speed! With the holidays approaching, you’ll no doubt be planning to travel in your motorhome, and you may encounter ZFEs along the way, which may have restrictions on older vehicles in order to avoid favoring newer vehicles that are considered less polluting.
As with passenger vehicles, a ZFE must be purchased and affixed to be able to drive in the ZFE Crit’air thumbnail on the windshield of your motorhome: depending on the age of your vehicle, this sticker allows you to classify it in a category from 1 to 5 or in a category dedicated to electric vehicles. This system then makes it possible to identify the oldest vehicles in order to ban them from the ZFE.
Motorhome: Two categories of Crit’Air stickers?
Motorhomes are a bit special because they are several categories of motorhomes : indeed, on the one hand, there are motor homes that are considered cars: those with a total weight of less than 3.5 tons. In addition, motor homes belong to the category of heavy goods vehicles, such as trucks. To find out the full weight of your motorhome, simply look at its gray card (or registration certificate) in field “F.1”.
For Light transport, Crit’air vignettes are allocated according to the Euro standard of your engine. Here are the Crit’air vignettes for the diesel engine most are equipped with campers :
- First put into circulation before December 31, 1996: Not eligible for Crit’air sticker
- Euro 2 (between 1 July 1997 and 31 December 2000): Crit’air 5 sticker
- Euro 3 (between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2005): Crit’air Sticker 4
- Euro 4 (between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2010): Crit’air 3 sticker
- Euro 5 and 6 (since January 1, 2011): Crit’air 2 sticker
Vignette Crit’air: an example of heavy-duty mobile homes
If your motorhome’s PTAC is over 3500kg, it falls into the category heavy weight, with a stricter classification. Here are the Crit’air vignettes for the diesel engine most are equipped with houses on wheels of large carrying capacity :
- First put into circulation before September 30, 2001: Not eligible for Crit’air sticker
- Euro 3 (from 1 October 2001 to 30 September 2006 inclusive): Crit’air 5 sticker
- Euro 4 (from 1 October 2006 to 30 September 2009 inclusive): Crit’air 4 sticker
- Euro 5 (from 1 October 2009 to 31 December 2013 inclusive): Crit’air 3 sticker
- Euro 6 (since January 1, 2014): Crit’air 2 sticker
Be careful if you don’t have a Crit’Air sticker: traveling in the ZFE with an unauthorized vehicle or without a Crit’Air sticker is punishable by a fine of up to €450. In total, this is a fixed fine of €68 (€135 for heavy-duty motorhomes).
