Sound radars: the beginning of verbalization in 2024 Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your mailbox

Another radar on the roads of France? We almost forgot about this one for the simple reason that it was in the testing phase for a while. And obviously the tests were conclusive because Sound radars are expected to officially enter service next year. They will be able to verbalize vehicles that make too much noise, such as a motorcycle without a chicane.

Although mandatory technical control for cars, and soon planned for two-wheelers, allows to guarantee compliance with standards, sound radars will have the task of penalizing those who have passed through the gap.

Surveillance cameras are mainly concentrated in Ile-de-France

The Bruitparif association therefore used the Méduse sensor (shown in the photo) for study and educational purposes, before deploying it from the summer of 2019 on several axes in Ile-de-France.

This sensor then served as the basis for a prototype sound radar called Hydra, which aims to detect non-compliant vehicles and identify them for sanctions.

On January 4, 2022, the experiment was officially launched in the Community of Communes of Haute-Vallee de Chevrez, as well as in Paris and Villeneuve-les-Roi. Other similar devices are also being tested in Rueil-Malmaison, Nice, Bron and Toulouse.

How much will the fine be?

Their approval will determine whether these automated speed cameras can be rolled out across the country to reduce the number of noisy vehicles. Bruitparif hopes so the system will be authorized by the end of the year to be able to redeploy radars.

If all goes according to plan, sound radars could start sounding out violators as early as 2024. Therefore, any driver whose car emits too much noise will be penalized under Article R318-3 of the Road Traffic Code. Thus, this will lead to fine 4thousand class and a fixed fine of 135 eurosreduced to €90 if paid within 90 days, but €375 for a fine increased after 60 days and €750 in case of legal action.

The radar works with eight microphones, a wide-angle camera and two license plate readers. It is fixed at a height of four to five meters and makes it possible to control two directions of circulation. These radars will only cover roads with a maximum speed of 50 km/h and signal vehicles whose noise level exceeds the threshold of 90 decibels.
