Since its opening in 1986Nissan plant in Sunderlandlocated in the northeast of England, produced no less 11 million cars. On average, for 37 years, a new car rolled off the assembly line every two minutes every day!

“This milestone reflects the vast experience of our world-class teams in creating high-quality cars that our customers love. We have come a long way since the beginning of production, creating iconic models. We always look to the future. Our fully electrified range and our EV36Zero plan promise us an exciting and sustainable future.”said Adam Pennick, vice president of manufacturing at Nissan’s Sunderland plant.

Nissan Sunderland: Qashqai will soon be delivered to France

The 11 millionth car produced at the Sunderland plant is the Nissan Qashqai e-Power in Blade Squale for a French customer. France is one of 137 countries to which cars manufactured at Nissan’s UK plant are shipped, and the Qashqai is one of three electrified models currently in production at the plant.

When it opened in 1986, the first car built in Sunderland was a white Nissan Bluebird, which took around 22 hours to build. Since then, production techniques have been improved, and now only approx 8.5 hours just make a copy of the new Nissan Qashqai!

The 11 million cars produced in Sunderland are various Nissan models: Bluebird, Qashqai, Micra, Primera, Juke, Almera, Note, LEAF and some Infiniti. The Qashqai holds the production record with 4.06 million units assembled in Sunderland, followed by the Micra with 2.37 million units, the Primera with 1.48 million units or the Juke with 1.29 million vehicles.

Nissan Sunderland: 12 GWh gigafactory coming soon

Nissan Sunderland is the largest car plant in the UK by volume, approx 6000 employees in their workforce. Nissan is also creating a further 30,000 jobs in the UK, mainly in the supply chain, which delivers around five million parts to the factory every day.

The Qashqai e-Power and Juke Hybrid went into production in Sunderland in the summer of 2022: today the entire Sunderland-built range is electrified, and there is the latest 100% electric Nissan LEAF. To date, more than 50,000 Qashqai e-Power units have been built in Sunderland, as well as 20,000 units of the Juke Hybrid.

The plant is also the center of the Nissan EV36Zero project: this 100% electric center will soon see the birth of a new electric vehicle, Gigafactory 12 GWh powered by Envision AESC, Nissan’s battery partner, and a microgrid that provides renewable energy for Nissan and its suppliers.
