carVertical has researched the European used car market and recently published the results of a survey influencing factors French people when buying a used vehicle compared to 7 other European countries: Romania, Poland, Italy, Hungary, France, Spain, Czech Republic and Great Britain.

This research tells us, in particular, that the French do not trust private sellers: in fact, 47.1% of used car buyers in France visit official dealers to make a purchase, compared to 55.7% in the UK and 43.4% in Spain. Although the prices are usually much higher than on classifieds sites, car dealerships are more trustworthy because they inspect the cars and often offer a warranty.

Almost 17.2% of French motorists use garages or independent car dealersand only 11.5% look for their used car on the Internet, on websites personal ads and other enterprises. This share is 20.8% in Spain and 12.6% in Italy.

But there are differences at the other end of Europe: in Eastern European countries most people buy a car on classifieds sites, while in Italy most used car buyers turn to private garages or car markets.

Used cars: different decision factors

The study also examines the most decisive factors when buying a car: more than 28.5% of French motorists say thatroad test account, while 15% trustfeedback from friends or familyand take into account 11.4%. online reviews.

Elsewhere, Eastern European drivers are among the most likely to consult friends and family before buying a used car, unlike the French, Spanish and Italians.

In France, 15.3% of buyers indicated thatcar history important for making a purchase decision: it indicates that very few motorists care about the history, an important point that helps avoid unpleasant surprises or fraudulent sellers, or wasting time on the road to see the wrong car. But in practice, 60.3% of French buyers still checked the history of the car before buying.

People who spend the most on their car are more likely to check its history: for a model under €1,000, only 66% of buyers check the history, compared to 75% of buyers in the €10,000 to €15,000 range and up to 87% for used cars over 60 000 euros.
