A new revolution in MG? After a range of products with almost unbeatable value for money today, the Sino-British manufacturer should release a new range of batteries from 2025.

This was announced by SAIC, the owner, in particular, of the MG brand the first electric vehicles equipped with solid-state batteries will be available within two years.

SAIC’s solid-state batteries were developed in a laboratory built by the group in collaboration with Chinese specialist in the field, ChingTao Energy. When the program was launched, SAIC had hoped to bring its solid-electrolyte ceramic batteries to market this year, but the group had to revise its plans and push back the deadline.

Power reserve up to 1000 km?

However, the purpose of the program remains the same. Thanks to solid-state batteries, SAIC hopes to bring to market an electric car capable of driving 1,000 km on a single charge.

In anticipation of commercialization, SAIC and ChingTao Energy have released some information about their next-generation batteries. Perhaps the most interesting thing concerns the capacity of recharging. Indeed, both companies claim their battery can do just that filled with electrons in just 15 minutes. However, the battery capacity has not been disclosed.

On the other hand, SAIC and ChingTao Energy simply stated that with their new battery they will achieve new standards in terms of energy density, safety and durability.

Impressive industrial power

A laboratory that develops solid-state batteries is also tasked with developing a manufacturing process large volumes in a short time. ChingTao started construction of the new plant in March 2022. It will be located in the eastern province of Jiangsu and is expected to guarantee an annual output of 10 GWh.

It remains to be seen which MG model will benefit from a battery capable of reaching 1,000 km of autonomy on a single charge. There’s also no word on whether this will be 1,000km of range under the Chinese certification cycle, which is less stringent than the European WLTP certification cycle.
