In July 2022, we told you about Hyundai plans to integrate the N sports label into the IONIQ line of electric cars. To increase the interest caused by this initiative, the manufacturer, in particular, presented a concept reminiscent of its first international stunt: N Vision 74. This is a neo-retro version The Pony CoupĂ© concept, designed by Giugiaro and presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1974. This “zero model” from Hyundai was the first Korean car to experience large-scale commercializationand global vocation. This shows how important this is to Hyundai. The brand recently announced that this concept, which is a nod to the original Pony…could hit the mass market!
Hyundai under neo-retro sauce?
This serial version may even be to be published no later than May 27, on the occasion of the event called “Pony Day”! Therefore, it is quite possible that this new model will be called “Pony” and will enter the market as early as 2024. It’s fifty years after the first Pony! Well, as for Europeans, this is not a significant event. Because we know very little about this model.
It disappeared from our catalogs before Hyundai gained the pleasant reputation it has today. But for the brand and for its native country, the recognition of the model that allowed it to start conquering the world is an event! From a technical point of view, the N Vision 74 concept produces about 680 horsepower. Electric transmission of combines a 62 kWh battery and a fuel cell. Will the final version designed by Giugiaro be as ambitious? The answer will be given on May 27, but until then, another surprise has been revealed…
The 1974 concept has been recreated from scratch
In addition to the N Vision 74 concept, Hyundai has just unveiled a perfect replica of the original concept: the 1974 Pony Vision Coupe ! The manufacturer reproduced it in parts, without rethinking it. The brand went so far as to replace its original engine under the hood. This is a block 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine developing 82 horsepower. Motor at that time supplied by Mitsubishi and installed on Colt and Lancer !
If you compare the concept with Hyundai’s latest creations, the connection is immediately obvious. Clear lines, platinum gray bodywork and geometric appeal these are the same codes that we find today, in particular, on the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6. Not forgetting, of course, the N Vision 74 concept. Here, Hyundai pays tribute to its past in an extraordinary way. Two surprises in such a short amount of time, and pretty much the same model, it’s starting to smell good.
