As for the production of batteries for electric cars, we cannot say that in France, and indeed in Europe in general, we are really ahead. According to an article we wrote a few days ago, Asia indeed monopolizes the majority of EV battery production in the world, far ahead of the United States and Europe.

Nonetheless, several projects are being implemented in Europe and France to open factories for the production of batteries. And good news, which the French government is currently working on creation of the fourth battery plant reported on the website of the National Commission for Public Discussions.

Hauts-de-France, the new El Dorado for drums?

The creation of a fourth electric battery plant in France, which is crucial to ensuring the end of sales of thermal cars in 2035, is being studied by Dunkirk. Emmanuel Macron is also expected at the venue on May 11 or 12, a government source told AFP. Several announcements could be made.

But who could get a foothold near Dunkirk? Taiwan-based group ProLogium plans to build two “Mass production of solid electric batteries in the great seaport of Dunkirk”.

Project, estimate “5.2 billion euros”targeting production capacity, likely in the long term “to equip 500,000 to 750,000 electric cars per year”. So far it was three prominent projects in France for battery plants for electric vehicleseverything is planned in the Hauts-de-France.

  • The ACC battery plant (a joint venture between Stellantis, TotalEnergies and Mercedes-Benz) is due to open in the coming months in Douvrin (Pas-de-Calais), a suburb of Lens.
  • The plant of the Sino-Japanese group AESC-Envision in Douai (North), which will produce for Renault from the beginning of 2025.
  • The factory of the Grenoble start-up Verkor, which from mid-2025 will also produce mainly for Renault.

The first factory of solid-state batteries

You might not have missed it, but the Taiwanese group ProLogium is talking about the production of solid-state batteries. Solid-state batteries, or solid-state batteries, are a technology that will help democratize electric vehicles in the coming years. There are many advantages: they provide greater autonomy, and their service life can exceed 15 yearswhich will allow using an electric car longer than now.

Cooldown times have also been greatly improved: some solid state batteries can actually be charged to 80% in just a few minutes, which significantly reduces idle time at the charging station during long journeys. Solid-state batteries also have the environmental advantage of containing fewer heavy metals and limiting the risk of fire.
