When Akio Toyoda announced at the beginning of the year that he was leaving Toyota, enthusiasts feared that the new management would hinder the development of the Gazoo Racing sports line.
The reason could be simple: to transfer funds intended for the development of sports cars to electric cars, a segment where Toyota is far ahead of its competitors. However, new director Koji Sato wanted to reassure and hinted at it the GR range may even expand.
Encouraging signals
In an interview with the British magazine Autocar, the Toyota boss said: “The Gazoo Racing range will always be relevant and we can even expand it”. He continued by clarifying that Akio Toyoda, who is no longer a director but the president of the Japanese manufacturer, “has much more time to develop the cars of the Gazoo Racing division he founded in 2007.”
Naturally, he declined to go into detail about what might come after the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, GR 86 and GR Supra.
The range is still under development
The latest rumors point to a hypercar, the famous GR Super Sport, but we haven’t heard from him since September 2021. This model was supposed to be a road-legal LMP1 version and produce around 1,000 hp, but it seems the manufacturer’s plans have changed in the meantime. On the other hand, the GRMN Supra could very well make an appearance and could be the most powerful Supra ever produced.
We are also looking forward to the production version of the “Sports EV” concept car, which was unveiled in late 2021. This is a two-seater roadster, which many already imagine as the successor to the famous Toyora MR2. This concept was present at the same time as another concept, this time from Lexus, which could become the successor of the LFA.
