Starting in December 2022, the BMW Group has been experimenting with a pilot program for a year to test a new fuel on his delivery trucks: HVO100AND renewable diesel consists of various waste products, including cooking oil.

The vehicles are used between the BMW plant in Munich and Landau an der Isar, about 120 km to the northeast, and from BMW’s supply center in Eching, north of Munich, to deliver parts to the Munich plant for production.

HVO100: renewable edible fuel for cooking

These trucks are part of a test fleet running on HVO100: HVO for “hydrotreated vegetable oil” and “100” to indicate that conventional diesel vehicles can run 100% on this renewable fuel.

HVO100, supplied by the Finnish company Neste, is made from waste, residues and renewable raw materials, includingof used oil for frying. Compared to conventional diesel, its production and use are thrown away up to 90% less CO2.

And even if fuel consumption is on average about 3% higher with the HVO100, the fleet used by the BMW Group should allow every year reduce CO2 emissions by 800 tons polluting emissions from trucks.

BMW: ecological logistics strategy

The HVO100 pilot project is part of the strategy green transport logistics BMW Group. “Every gram of CO2 we can avoid is useful”says Michael Nicolaides, BMW Group Head of Production Network and Logistics: “We continue to reduce the carbon footprint of our transport networks and supply chains through various measures. ยป

The BMW Group also uses other solutions, including electric and gas trucks at its various plants, as well as hydrogen conveyors at the Hydrogen Competence Center in Leipzig.

One of the advantages of the HVO100 is its ease of use : Vehicles and engines do not need to be modified to use it, it can be supplied through existing service station infrastructure and can be mixed with regular diesel in any proportion.
