For many, plug-in hybrid cars are often an intermediate solution between thermal and electric, with their advantages and disadvantages, but above all the possibility of evolution to electric over more or less short distances, without worrying about autonomy or recharging.

If a few years ago the autonomy of plug-in hybrids painfully exceeded 50 km in fully electric mode, several new products today claim 80, 100 or even more than 120 km on a single charge. This is especially true of German premium cars, where Mercedes has several champions in this field.

Power reserve on electricity up to 200 km

But the undisputed new queen, at least on paper, is not German. This is the new Chinese sedan unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show, namely BYD Destroyer 07.

Even if it’s a concept car at the moment (which still looks a lot like a production car), Asian manufacturer announces 200km electric range for its PHEV sedan.

With a length of 4.98 meters, a width of 1.89 meters, a height of 1.49 meters and a wheelbase of 2.9 meters, it presents itself as a competitor to the German flagships in China, offering an engine that combines the best of both worlds.

Two battery sizes are available

The technical characteristics of the electrical part are still unknown. All we know is that there will be a 1.5-liter petrol unit under the hood, available in either a turbocharged or a turbocharged version. There will also be two battery sizes. Depending on the selected package, autonomy will be 121 km or 200 km.

Aesthetically, the BYD Destroyer 07 takes some cues from the Seal, a 100% electric sedan that rivals the Tesla Model 3, with rounded lines interspersed with more “angular” elements.

According to rumors, the Chinese plug-in hybrid sedan will enter the local market in the second half of 2023. with prices starting at RMB 199,800 (approx. EUR 26,500). It is not yet known whether it will arrive in Europe.
