The year 2024 will be marked by the appearance of an important model for Renault with the new electric R5. Its presentation should take place at the end of 2023, so the French manufacturer is slowly but surely starting to provide some information about its model.

Even if it lacks numbers at the moment, Renault does offer a few tidbits regarding the car’s architecture, as well as its engine and battery.

Renault 5 electric: platform

So, let’s start with the element that will surprise us the least: the platform. Unsurprisingly, the diamond firm confirms that its R5 will be based on the famous CMF, on which most of the products of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance are based, be they thermal, hybrid or electric. The electric Renault 5 will be the basis variant CMF-B EVintended for electric models of segment B.

The brand clarifies that this platform provides versatility and flexibility, in particular a significant reduction in costs. Renault has also taken a cue from the Zoé, as thanks to the optimization of certain elements, the manufacturer manages to save up to 30% in production costs compared to the Zoé.

There is also a surprise the presence of a multi-lever rear axletechnology so rare for B-segment cars. This technical choice is now commonplace among several high-end manufacturers for driving dynamics reasons, and Renault has chosen this system to move towards greater “fun to drive” according to him.

Electric Renault 5: engine

For the engine, Renault chose a synchronous unit with a rotating rotor, as in the Zoé and Mégane E-Tech. This engine is devoid of permanent magnets and rare earth elements, which allows you to save on its production, as well as increase the weight by about 20 kg.

If Renault has not yet released the figures, several sources mention power from 120 to 150 hpas well as up to more than 200 hp. for the famous Alpine version, which will arrive by 2025.

Renault 5 electric: battery

As for batteries, yes status quo, since, as with the engine, the diamond mark does not give numbers. On the other hand, we already know that it will be a new battery in the range, with a simplified architecture and 12-module routing, like the Zoé battery, with four large modules, which allows to reduce the weight by 15 kg. The package should also be relatively thin, with Renault announcing that there will only be one level of modules with better energy density.

As for the battery capacity, it is not yet known, but according to our information, Renault should offer two capacities: 40 and 52 kWh. The smaller battery should have a range of just over 300 km, compared to around 420 for the larger one.

Renault 5 electric: price and availability

The electric Renault 5 will be produced from 2024 at the Cléon plant in Normandy. Production is expected to begin in the fall of the same year.

In terms of price, Renault hasn’t put forward any prices yet, although we already know that the price of the car should start just below 25,000 eurosexcluding environmental bonus.
