Amprius Technologies is one of the most promising companies in the production of high-density batteries. In 2021, an American startup announced the creation of a battery with a density of 370 Wh/kg. Last year it was possible to reach 450 Wh/kg.

Today she goes further and claims not less than 500 W*h/kg. A value that allows Amprius to soon announce a battery that, compared to the average battery on the market, can achieve the same level of autonomy as certain samples in the sector, all in half the space and weight.

Certified result

The record value achieved by the American company’s battery was confirmed by Mobile Power Solutions, which specializes in battery performance evaluation.

Mobile Power Solutions claimed that the Amprius Technologies lithium-ion battery achieved a density of 504 Wh/kg and 1,321 Wh/l at 25 degrees Celsius.

New application possibilities

Amprius says the result with its battery paves the way for a new range of batteries for future electric vehicles. With such a density, this battery can also be adopted aeronautical spherewhere the weight of batteries today is problematic and raises serious questions about the electric future of the sector.

This is also confirmed by Pierre-Antoine Aubourg, technical director of Aalto Haps, a subsidiary of Airbus that develops new generation technologies and devices. “We are now carefully evaluating the benefits of the new Amprius 500Wh battery”– said Pierre-Antoine Aubourg, “to continue the development of our products. ยป

However, this battery has some drawbacks, one of which seems problematic enough to consider inevitable marketing. Amprius specifies that its 500kW/kg battery has service life from 200 to 1200 cycles.

By performing a “weak” average, the battery can begin to degrade significantly between 500 and 700 cycles. But under certain conditions it can lose performance after 200 or 300 cycles according to Amprius.

We will remind thatThe average durability of an electric battery is estimated for approximately 1000-1500 recharge cycles. This equates to between 250,000 and 500,000 kilometers depending on usage and battery capacity. When it comes to durability, the American company still has a long way to go before it can match current batteries in the industry.
