Ferrari Roma Spider (2023): the quintessence of a convertible Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

True, this is not the most powerful Ferrari, not the most magnificent Ferrari, not the most exciting Ferrari, but this new Roma Spider is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful convertibles of recent yearswith its Latin lines reminiscent of some Ferraris of the 1950s and 1960s.

In addition, the new Ferrari Roma also harkens back to the past, being the first front-engined Ferrari to receive a canvas roof in 54 years and the famous 365 GTS/4.

Weight gain is measured

As you can see in the photos, the new Ferrari Roma Spider has all the features of the Roma, even if the Ferrari design department led by Flavio Manzoni has revised some elements to better integrate the appearance of the removable roof. If convertibles have a bad reputation as “line breakers,” the Ferrari Roma Spider, like the California before it, manages to maintain a silhouette that’s both sensual and sporty.

Cabriolet obliged, the engineers had to retouch certain elements of the chassis, using some elements of the Portofino M. Even if the weight increased by 84 kg compared to the classic rom, the Spider version generally retains the same skills. The canvas roof, available in four colors, can open and close in 13.5 seconds and reach speeds of up to 60 km/h. Boot capacity remains relatively correct for a Ferrari convertible, with a claimed 255 liters when the roof is closed.

The presence of a removable roof forced the aerodynamicists to review the car’s configuration, with the introduction of a new geometry of the movable rear wing. Ferrari also added a small 5mm deflector to the cross section of the windscreen to minimize turbulence.

There are practically no changes inside. Roma Spider is a 2+2 cabriolet with a kind of “double cockpit” that allows the front passenger to feel like they are in a cocoon without a steering wheel. The latter, as an option, may even have the right to a small screen in front of it with basic information related to driving.

Execution is always at the highest level

Now let’s move on to the most important part: the engine. No wonder we find the International Engine of the Year winner four years in a row: the 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 in configuration 620 hp and 760 Nm of torque.

Engineers revised several items, starting with a new oil pump, to significantly improve the engine’s cold start performance.

The eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission shares the same architecture as the SF90 Stradale, but has been reworked to add another coupe-like gear ratio. Productivity remains at the highest level, the maximum speed is declared over 320 km/h and shot from 0 to 100 km/h 3.4 seconds. These are exactly the same data as in the coupe.

With the Ferrari Roma starting at just under €220,000, it’ll take a few thousand more to afford a similarly desirable convertible, which should please affluent GT convertible enthusiasts when Ferrari arrives in the summer.
