Some manufacturers have already set an end date for internal combustion engines. This applies to Audi or even Mercedes, which will no longer introduce new thermal cars from 2026 and 2030 respectively. Other manufacturers, on the contrary, preferred to continue their electrification projects new generation heat engines.

This is the case with BMW, which according to German newspaper Handelsblatt is working on new heat engines that should last for a few more years. The goal for BMW is also to pass the Euro 7 standard, even if the announced goals seem very difficult to achieve.

Customers still demand heat

BMW has not officially confirmed this information, but the rumor looks quite plausible, especially since in early 2022 Frank Weber, BMW’s director of development, spoke about his intention to the German media Auto Motor Und Sport. to continue the development of internal combustion engines.

According to Handelsblatt, the Bavarian manufacturer will focus on large diesel engines, which will be widely used by European buyers of large SUVs.

BMW is also reportedly working on new versions of four-, six- and eight-cylinder gasoline engines which can be equipped with almost all models in the assortment. Of course, these engines can be widely electrified to meet Euro 7 standards.

Electrics for BMW M, but not only

Six and eight cylinders will also be found under the hood of the next BMW M, the manufacturer’s sports division. On the other hand, for four-cylinder hybrids, it’s a firm and emphatic no, as BMW has already stated. Remember that Mercedes-AMG recently opted for this option on its new C 63.

However, the advent of heat engines will not affect the strategy dedicated to electric vehicles. BMW’s goal is to sell 50% 100% electric models by 2030.

Proof of this is that the electric range will be significantly expanded in the coming months, including the first electric X2, the new generation iX3 or the new i5. There are also rumors that the first electric M will be in the starting blocks, with no less than four electric motors and around 1,000 hp.
