Renault Austral: what is the entry level worth? News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your mailbox

To finally comfortably position yourself in the C-segment SUV market, Renault cleaned up the past. And hence the (relative) failures of Koleos and Kadjar. On this occasion, the French manufacturer starts with a new platform. This is the opening of a new title designed to create an unlimited field of possibilities: Southern. The newbie takes over stylistic codes in the new electric Mégane E-Tech. In particular, its elongated headlights and dual C-shaped rear light badge.

Otherwise, the SUV wants to be quite muscular, sporting fenders with a dynamic design. Ribs on the sides and clearly visible wheel arches. Renault also paid special attention to the passenger cabin, which is characterized by high-quality materials and a large space. There is a lot of storage space, and the ergonomics are good. The catalog contains light hybrids 12V (1.3 l 140 or 160 hp) and 48 V (1.2l 130 hp). And also a “full hybrid” engine based on the block 1.2-liter gasoline, offered in 160 and 200 hp.

Ground zero of the Australs

But what is the entry-level Austral worth? In general, if entry-level prices are so attractive, that’s why they sacrifice comfort. As well as equipment and security equipment. But contrary to what was done a few years ago, cheap no longer means ugly. Remember, the entry-level models used to be models with black plastic bumper, without caps or even headlight fairings ! Current products have more taste and quality. On a model as large as the Austral, Renault kept the furniture while sacrificing a few attributes. But keeping the essentials. The range starts at the Balance finishand the motor 130 hp 48V 1.2 gasoline engine in combination with a manual transmission. It is shown in France from 34,000 euros.

Good party price?

At first sight, this inexpensive version is not bad. No black plastic on the bumpers or door handles. 17-inch discs do not distort the visual setalthough their design makes the plastic very cheap. Aboard, it is less flashy with gray fabric upholstery. Completely black door trims and instrument panels, without frills and decorations dress. However, the instruments and infotainment system are 100% digital (9″ + 12″!)

She sits down standard LED headlights, R-Link multimedia system, dual-zone air conditioning. Four electric windows, front and rear USB ports. As for behavior, the engine has good noise isolation. But cebloc 1.2 turns out to be quite soft despite the generator-starter who seeks to erase his hollows. Suspensions are quite stiff (requires 17-inch rims), but the demeanor remains reassuring and efficient. After all, this entry-level Austral isn’t all that bad, even if higher trims offer more visual vibrancy and driving pleasure.
