Nissan Skyline: Coming back soon, but in an unexpected form? News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your mailbox

Is the Nissan Skyline about to make a comeback? There are chances. But if you’re already thinking about a new sports car like the one driven by Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker’s alter ego) in 2 Fast 2 Furious, think again.

According to the first rumors (which have not yet been officially confirmed by Nissan), the Skyline may be related to electric SUV that could arrive in North America by 2025.

Nissan Skyline: SUV soon?

Rumors published by Japanese magazine Best Car suggest an SUV based on the same architecture as the Ariya, but with a sportier design and with a total power of more than 400 hp. Thus, Nissan must emphasize sportiness with special grounding and top-notch performance for an electric SUV.

If this initial information is confirmed, it will be a turning point for the name, which has been attached to sedans and coupes since 1957. The Skyline “label”, if you can call it that, experienced a peak of popularity in the 1990s. and the 2000s thanks to the Fast and Furious saga and numerous video games, including Gran Turismo.

But since then, the Skyline’s identity has been somewhat abused, as it was sold in the US and Japan as a sedan and (for a brief period) as a crossover that was very different from the sports cars we knew.

Pure marketing product?

And Nissan is not the only manufacturer that “occupies SUVs” with cult brands, sometimes even more famous than the manufacturer himself. For example, in recent years the same fate has been reserved for the Mitsubishi Eclipse (the car driven by Paul Walker in the first “Fast and Furious”), which recently became the Eclipse Cross, a hybrid SUV.

We can also make a connection with the Mustang name, which is now also associated with a significant 100% electric SUV, as well as the Corvette, which may soon become its own brand at General Motors with many electric SUVs.
