The BMW Z4 recently received a well-deserved makeover. In general, there are no major changes, apart from a few aesthetic details and a revised equipment package.

Fans of the brand could imagine that with this restyling, BMW decided to introduce a much more efficient version than the M40i version, which is currently the leader of the range. Indeed, many are still hoping for the Z4 M, but alas BMW simply dashed all the hopes of fans of the German convertible.

Too expensive to develop

Such a decision is not surprising, given the fact that the roadster segment is no longer really lively, quite the opposite. And the appearance of the electric car definitely does not contribute to this. The Z4 remains a niche product for BMW, and while many fans want to see the Z4 M, most won’t sign the check to leave it in the garage.

And that is why BMW does not intend to release an M-version of its model. The market, even if it exists, is simply too small. Michael Wimbeck, the head of the Z4 project, told our colleagues at BMW Blog that the manufacturer has studied the market well and is seriously considering the Z4 M in the current version, but in the end, the finance department disagreed.

The last of the thermal BMW Z4?

To some extent, BMW already has the Z4 M. Admittedly, it’s not a full-fledged M division model, but the Z4 M40i already shares elements with the M3 and M4, even if it’s much less radical. Making the current Z4 even better, so making it an M version would certainly require a small investment to step up from the current model.

However, to appease fans, BMW plans to develop a six-cylinder model, engine and manual transmission, just like its technical cousin the Toyota Supra. And there is no doubt that the BMW Z4 M40i with a manual transmission and a power of 340 hp. will have some success especially since the next generation is far from being determined.
