Every month when car sales figures fall in France or Europe, it’s not uncommon for a record number of electric cars sold in a month to be broken. Recently In a month, electric cars even exceeded sales of electric models in France.
But how many electric cars in France at the time of writing these lines? Of course, there are more and more of them, and electricity users have probably noticed this for several years a slight increase in traffic at some charging stations.

There are more than 700,000 electric cars in France
According to Avere France, the number of electric cars on the road at the end of February 2023 will be 706 773 very precisely, against 537,721 years ago.
Therefore, the increase per year is quite dizzying, with +31% electric cars in France in one year. Looking at previous years, they were less than 300,000, and at the end of 2017 even less than 90,000. Of course, tax breaks and increased product range led to such a significant increase.
The share of plug-in cars is growing significantly
On the other hand, if we put a figure of about 700,000 against the 41.2 million cars currently in circulation in the country, all engines together, it’s still pretty marginal.
Even if battery hybrids are also condemned in 2035, they will still find their audience with 432,205 units in France against 291,834 last year at the same time (+48%).
Combining the figures for electric cars and PHEVs, we got 1.16 million so-called battery cars in France. For comparison, as of February 2022, there were 829,555 of them.
