It’s no longer a secret, Mercedes is about to make a serious cleaning in the range. A few products are going to disappear or evolve, but the German manufacturer intends to put an end to this policy, which consisted in occupying every corner of the market with the product.

Convertibles and coupes should bear the brunt of this major cleanup. The C-Class and E-Class will not be eligible for said versions, and the CLS should disappear. These models should be replaced by a new car at the crossroads, which should be called the CLE. This will likely be the only convertible available from Mercedes for years to come, barring exclusives like the Mercedes-AMG SL, for example.

Make way for SUVs

In the same spirit, the 4-door Mercedes-AMG GT Coupé, whose name is truly confusing, should disappear after the end of its career. This Porsche Panamera rival will only be eligible for one and only generation if confirmed. The Mercedes S-Class was also not eligible for coupe and cabriolet versions for this new version.

At Mercedes, we will focus on profitable products first, especially in this particularly volatile period. Gorden Wagener, head of design at Mercedes, spoke to Car Magazine about this and what the future holds for the German manufacturer’s range. When asked about the design team’s various projects, he said that 60% of the effort this decade will be dedicated to SUVs. 30% of the time will be devoted to sedans, and the remaining 10% to special projects.

Mercedes will always offer interesting products

That last 10% will be partly dedicated to sports cars, but also somewhat special cars that are in the middle between several segments. Gorden Wagener said that, for example, there could be a sedan based on the F 015 concept presented in 2015.

Especially since this project was particularly liked by certain people working at Apple, who would confirm to Mercedes that this was the model “very much in the spirit of what they imagined if Apple made a car”.
