Since 1982, fans of the Volkswagen brand have made a habit of gathering every year on the shores of Lake Werthersee in Austria to celebrate the sportiest models of the brand and even the Volkswagen Group in general.

Over the years, this event even became peculiar informal recreation room for the builderwhich even presented new products on this occasion.

An event that became too important

Yes, but now this festival may have been established for 30 years, but the local community of Maria Werth recently decided that she no longer wants to host the event with immediate effect. Remember that the event has not taken place for three years after three consecutive cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Town Hall of Maria Wert explains its decision for two reasons: the limited capacity of the premises, which became more than enough given the enthusiasm surrounding the event, and “Secondary consequences of a car accident”and, in particular, the rudeness of some festival-goers. The event welcomed more than 5,000 cars and 150,000 people in a city that has only 1,600 souls during the year.

Holiday at home

Who better than Volkswagen to “save” this event? The manufacturer just announced this in a press release that he is going to host this meeting in Wolfsburg from next year.

For 2024, the German manufacturer is planning an event called “GTI Coming Home”, which will meet fans of sporty, high-performance and even slightly more exotic Volkswagen models near the Wolfsburg plant. The show will not be limited to Volkswagen. As in Werthersee, Volkswagen sports cars will also be welcomed.

In addition to running the event for many years to come, Volkswagen also wants to grow it with ideas that come directly from fans. In 2024, Volkswagen promised to present several models, organize several shows and meetings between clubs. Many other events are planned, including, why not, a program-exclusive presentation of a new model.
