Having made a bet on aluminum and ecological paints, the BMW Group continues its activities within the framework of the circular economy. New Cabriolet Mini Cooper SE will be the first production model to be equipped Alloy wheels made entirely ofrecycled aluminum.
“As a high-end manufacturer, we have integrated sustainability into the design from the very beginning” said Dr. Nikolai Martin, Senior Vice President of Automated Driving Development at Mini: “The alloy wheels on our all-electric four-seater convertible are a great example of sustainable resource use and are an important step towards a circular economy for the BMW Group”.
Mini Cooper SE Convertible: collaboration with Ronal
To design these alloy wheels100% strong aluminumMini has teamed up with a wheel manufacturer Ronald : thanks to the use of recycled aluminum, raw material sources are preserved and the electrolysis process, which is particularly energy-intensive, is no longer needed.
Made from 100% recycled aluminum, these rims feature metal inserts aerodynamically optimizedas well as an innovative center cap that allowsincreasing autonomy convertible Mini Cooper SE.
Made entirely of recycled light alloy, this wheel perfectly meets the design requirements and high quality standards of the BMW Group. In this way, these alloy wheels help to reduce the car’s carbon footprint both during production and during driving.
Mini Cooper SE Cabrio: 75% reduction in carbon emissions.
Thanks to the use of secondary materials with a carbon footprint of less than 0.16 kg of carbon per kilogram of aluminum, the supplier of these discs was able reduce carbon emissions of the production workshop by 75% compared to conventional discs. In practice, carbon emissions are reduced from about 130 kg to about 30 kg.
The Mini Cooper SE Convertible with recycled aluminum alloy wheels is part of a pilot project to gradually reduce the demand for raw materials. These alloy wheels can also be completely redesigned at the end of its life cycle. In this way, the BMW Group contributes to reducing the amount of aluminum that needs to be produced for the production of cars.
Thanks to these strong alloy wheels, the BMW Group has for the first time succeeded in creating a high-quality wheel production cycle. This initiative is in line with the brand’s ambitious sustainability goals for the circular economy.
