A few years ago, the GTI label disappeared from Peugeot when the eponymous 308 was abandoned. The manufacturer from Sochaux could, like many other brands today, leave sports aside to devote itself to more important and expensive topics, such as, for example, the energy transition. But NoPeugeot took the opportunity to introduce a new sporty label, which is the basis of its new policy leading to electricity.
That’s the PSE label (for Peugeot Sport Engineered), and it was the 508 that first adopted those three letters on its body in 2020. Equipped with a hybrid engine that combines a four-cylinder 1.6-liter turbo and two electric ones. engines, the three-color sedan claimed to be a trifle 360 hp.
Peugeot 508 PSE: sales have become too low
“claimed”, indeed, since, as our Argus colleagues have noted, Peugeot 508 PSE disappeared from the catalog in Februaryas well as other battery hybrid versions of the 508. The reason is simple: Peugeot is preparing a restyling of its sedan this summer, the PHEV versions will return later.
Will they all return? Probably not. In effect, Peugeot would choose not to restore the 508 PSE after the restyling. The reason seems pretty obvious, since there aren’t really any sales. Indeed, Peugeot 508 PSE just found 314 customers in France last year. We are quite far from agiotage at the launch of the model, where Peugeot was pleased to surpass the milestone of 2,000 units produced. Even if the brand never intended to increase volumes with such a model, sales have become too low.
Will the PSE label continue?
But with the end of the 508 PSE, another question arises: what about the PSE label itself? Given the fact that it is Peugeot’s sporting signature, it will not disappear even in competition, on the contrary, especially as the manufacturer prepares its big return for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
On the other hand, it seems more difficult than expected on production cars. In effect, There are no Peugeot 208 or 308 in the boxes. On the other hand, there may be a chance to see it again in the new Peugeot 3008, which will be presented at the end of the year. It remains to be seen whether the PSE label will be attached to the plug-in hybrid version or the 100% electric version of the 3008.
