Volvo and sports cars are an association that did not necessarily mark the history of the car. Indeed, the Swedish manufacturer is better known for the reliability and durability of its wagons than for its competitiveness.

And the future of the manufacturer does not seem to go in this direction yet, as Volvo today is SUVs, sedans and station wagons, which will become electric by 2030. So, you see, that’s why it’s not necessarily a place for a sports car in absolute terms.

A sporty electric Volvo?

But despite everything, the manufacturer does not seem to be completely closed to the idea of developing a sports car. At least that’s how the chief operating officer of Volvo Björn Annuwall explained in an interview with the Australian magazine Car Sales.

“Every car brand needs a bit of fashion that pushes the boundaries of what a car really is, and I think Volvo should also offer these additional products”. And when asked by Australian journalists whether the brand plans to release a new sports car, Björn Annuwall smiled and answered: “Stay in touch.”

Priority to profitable cars

In addition, brand design director Orjan Sterner said that working on a “coupe or sports car”but warned that profit must always prevail. That’s why Volvo is currently focusing mainly on the SUV segment.

If an electric and sports car will see the light of day at Volvo, obviously, it seems that there will be synergy with other brands in the Geely galaxy, of which Volvo is a part. And who do we find in Geely and who knows how to do sports?

Lotus of course. While the Sino-British manufacturer is focusing on the launch of its Eletre SUV, the brand is working on several 100% electric sports cars, one of which will share elements with the upcoming 100% electric Alpine A110.
