Since the beginning of the health care crisis andOutbreak of COVID-19, the situation for the automotive industry is far from the best. Worse, it’s even a disaster when sales return for a period to 1970s levels. And over the years, no real improvement was noticed. In 2022, registrations actually fell by 7.8% compared to 2021, a year that was already far from a good crop. Suffice it to say that manufacturers had good reason to be concerned, even if some managed to get out of the game after all. But will 2023 be synonymous with improvement?

A small increase

Everything leads us to believe this, and this is very good news. In fact, there was a very slight improvement in enrollment in January. According to the CCFA, sales have indeed increased increased by 8.8% compared to January 2022 for passenger cars. On the other hand, during the same period, indicators of light utility services fell by 5.4%. A total of 111,939 vehicles were sold last month, compared to 102,899 in 2022. That’s a welcome improvement that should be quite reassuring, even if the numbers are lower than in January 2021.

Unequal results

But as you can imagine, not all manufacturers are really in the same boat. Indeed, while Stellantis lost 9.5% in January despite good results from Fiat, Opel and DS, Renault saw a 23.6% increase in sales over the same period. Toyota is also a hit, with registrations up 18%. It is not surprising that gasoline still dominates sales, followed by simple hybrids and electric cars. Diesel, on the contrary, lags far behind.
