Although 2022 was a very tough year for car manufacturers, the Japanese manufacturer still came out on top. Toyota has indeed defended its title as the car manufacturer with the highest number of models sold for the third year in a row!
Toyota is again number 1 in the world
Final figures show the Japanese automaker delivered 10,483,024 vehicles worldwide. Those figures, down 0.1% from 2021, include deliveries by Daihatsu subsidiaries as well as commercial vehicle maker Hino.
Good news, the Japanese group is moving away from its direct German competitor. Auto conglomerate Volkswagen sold “only” 8.3 million vehicles in 2022, down 7% from the previous year. It’s also the group’s worst performance in over 10 years. This is explained, in particular, by the recent crises related to the resurgence of Covid-19 in China, which is a very important market for Volkswagen. Supply difficulties also weighed on the scales.

Manufacturer still skeptical about electric?
It’s not a secret anymore. The Japanese manufacturer does not yet show great ambitions for electricity. Recently, even the CEO himself admitted this. Akio Toyoda has said this several times: we mentioned it in the article a few weeks ago.
All-electric does indeed seem like a very European ambition, which has decided to completely abandon thermal energy by 2035. But in the rest of the world, the future is seen differently. Toyota is betting on alternative solutions and strengthening its hybrid offering, in particular, its favorite area for more than 25 years.
In 2023, the Japanese group is as ambitious as ever and plans to build almost 10.6 million cars in 2023!
