The beginning of the year is always synonymous with summing up the past months, and this, of course, is relevant for all areas. And in particular in the automotive industry, while December figures, and therefore from the previous year of decline. Then you can get an overview of the market and, in particular, the best-selling models. And in 2022, one car stood out, while the situation looks far from the best. And it’s not for nothing that registrations across France have fallen by more than 7% over the past twelve months. But some models manage to hold on.

French success

This is especially true for the Peugeot 208. This city car has been the best-selling car of the year since January, ahead of the Dacia Sandero and its longtime rival the Renault Clio. A big success for the star of the brand, presented in 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show, at the same time as the city car with a diamond. But the lioness attracts not only individual people. Indeed, it is also the model most valued by professionals and corporate fleets, according to data from the Arval Mobility Observatory. With 29,182 units sold, the 208 outsold the Clio as well Citroën C3 and Peugeot 3008. Foreign cars go very far, starting in 12th place with Tuscon.

Declining sales

As with private individuals, the professional car market also took a hit during the year, with sales down about 12% since January. By comparison, 196,000 fewer companies were sold than in 2019, the pre-war period when registrations were doing quite well. In general, French models are still not bad, as well as some foreign cars, such as volkswagen golf, Toyota Yaris or Ford Kuga. Tesla Model Y dominates sales of electric cars.
