The number of EPZs in France has increased in recent years. These low-emission zones, formerly known as ZCRs (restricted traffic zones), aim to drive out the oldest cars that are considered the most polluting. Discrimination, which is then done based on the Crit’Air sticker, which sets the ranking by numbers. Today, all cars without a sticker or with a Crit’Air 5 are banned from major cities, and some now also ban category 4 cars. And this will get even tougher over the next few years, as by 2025 all major cities with a population of over 150,000 must will become neutralization zones.

Unknown measure

You might think that all motorists have already heard about this measure, which is very restrictive and which is becoming more and more relevant in the country. And contrary to all expectations, it is still very far from that. As shown by the research conducted Rul (former club “Identikar”) from a sample of 1,000 people, at least 56% do not know what EPZ is. In fact, only 13% are able to explain exactly what it is. These are mostly young people (51%) and CSP+ (53%), mostly men. Indeed, 66% of women admit that they do not know what EPZ (now called ZFE-M for the emission zone with low mobility), compared to 45% of men.

Lots of limitations

Be that as it may, this measure remains a real limitation for all who undergo it. In fact, 74% of respondents explain that they do not intend to change car, especially because of the associated cost. In addition, 15% say that they no longer want to travel to the respective cities, and 13% explain that they will not respect the traffic bans. However, 5% of participants even consider move no longer suffer from these restrictions, while 33% decided to use public transport more.
